Well, I go there 2-3 times a year and am moving there with my husband this summer. And here are some websites for you to help you plan it.
If you have never been there before, I suggest you take in all the free stuff first. That will take you 4-5 days just to do that. Then, if you are staying longer, you can take it a show. Or combine the two.
Here the best deal on the net for rooms, rental cars, show tickets and airfare. Best deals overall. I haven't found a site that compares for prices and availability.
Stay on the strip the first time you go. Or you might get lost getting to and from the strip.
Here's the site:
http://www.tripres.com/Default.aspx
Now for FREE stuff here is a site that gives you alot of the FREE things and some of the shows etc that play in town.
http://www.vegas.com/attractions/freeattractions.html
Also, on that site check out all the other things to do.
Next is a site that offers all kinds of legit coupons for FREE stuff and Buy One Get One FREE stuff.
http://www.lasvegas-nv.com/las-vegas-coupons.htm
On the first site, it will have whatever shows are available and how much they are. Check that out if you want show tickets.
Hopefully that will help you plan your trip.
When I go, I first decide when I am going. Then I search the first site for rooms etc.
Then I book them. Then I see what shows etc that I want to see and book them. I pay right then and know that they are confirmed and set.
Then I check the FREE stuff and decide what I will do besides.
Keep in mind there are lots of rides at different casinos, as well as fun things that you can do.
Here is a list of suggestions if you don't know what to do.
The IMAX and motion rides at the Luxor.
The Tournament Of Kings Dinner/Show at the Excalibur. (A great meal and show for a fantastic price compared to alot of the other shows in town. And it's really fun.)
The Fountains at the Bellagio.
The Volcano at the Mirage.
The Rollercoaster at the New York New York. (Lots of good places to eat in there.)
The Animatronic statue shows at the Caesars Palace. (Very entertaining. FREE. One is Neptune and his children. The other is Greek Gods.)
The Rollercoaster at the Sahara.
Blue Man Group Show at the Venetian.
The Wax Museum at the Venetian. (Take your camera, these statues are amazing and you'll want to take pics.)
The Tower at the Stratosphere. Even if you don't ride the rides, it's fantastic for viewing the area, day or night. And the rides will freak with your mind.)
That's just for starters, these sites will have lots more. But, this will give you a first look at Vegas. Have Fun.

Vegas isn't the best place for kids. Sure there are things to do but they are limited. Las Vegas is considered an adult playground. I will list a few activities that kids seem to enjoy:
Gameworks
M&M World
Star Trek experience
Stratosphere Rides
Adventuredome
NY NY Coney Island
Shark Reef
Tiger Habitat
Grand Canyon Hummer tour
A lot of families with kids stay at Circus, Circus or Excalibur. I would suggest Mandalay Bay *they have the Beach swimming pool* or Monte Carlo (wave pool, lazy river).
Go to Vegas.com to research hotels and do exactly that: RESEARCH. There are travel agents always willing to help you and your family out. Have fun.

We went a few years ago and took the kids, we stayed at Circus Circus. They have an indoor amusement park and laser tag. They also have some cool circus like shows inside. If you take kide there, try and keep them out of the casino as much as possible though, not a great atmosphere for the kids. There are quite a few cool things for kids to do in Vegas though.

My kids love las vegas. There is plenty for kids to do. mirage dolphin habitat, Bellagio water show, pirate show, circus circus, m&m world, lions at mgm, downtown laser show, Adventure dome. And the list goes on. Take them to see Rick Thomas. Its not that expensive. And the magic is amazing. And if the hotel has a pool, for my kids, thats an all day activity. There are arcades everywhere! Go to vegas.com. and you can look up all the family activities there. We usually go for a week and we are not bored. We have stayed at the Tropicana, and circus circus. Tropicana has a nice pool. I heard Golden nugget has a new pool complete with water slide and shark tank. We are staying there this summer. have fun

We always plan as far in advance as possible >we are already holding 16 nights for next December-January & we began putting together a May-June(15nights) trip in November<
We check these sites for LV room rates. We have always found we could save money by booking rooms and air separate. >I check these sites but always book through the hotel< That way we can keep looking for better deals.

http://www.i4vegas.com
This is a great site for LV info, including buffets, free hotel shuttles, etc
http://www.lasvegasadvisor.com
these sites list hundreds of activities, many of them free

Great hotel for families - very nice rooms, nice pool, great food options, fun things to do.
http://www.orleanscasino.com >they will price match the best rate you find for their hote online
The Luxor "generally" offers the best deals for a four star strip hotel. Sign up for their e-mail updates, they send out promo offers all the time. they have a promo going until the end of May. Use this PC >PGET19< online.
http://www.luxor.com
This is a nice 3 star hotel, they offer very good rates. Many people do not like that it's located at the far North end of the strip
http://www.stratospherehotel.com >they will also price match
We go to LV 2-3 times a year for 2 weeks or more at a time and have for over 20 years. We usually switch hotels 3-4 times during a stay. So we have stayed at quite a few hotels over the years.
We gamble of course, sight see, shop, swim, shows, eat(buffets mostly)

I wouldn't take kids to Vegas. Up and down the strip there are yahoos passing out fliers of big jug girls and escort services. Is that what you want to show your kid? You could go to Circus, but most of the other resorts are so over the top, they are meant for wealthy, mature, sophisticated clientele. Try Disney et.al. instead.

there is absolutely nothing to do here. It is the city of sin. its mostly gambling . its mostly an adult city. but if you were too take younger children with you, then i would recommend the hotel Cirus Circus. It has an ammusement park inside the building with many rides for younger children and teen agers.
