For some reason this year tons of people have gone emo. Most of the people were people i everyonce in awhile hung out with and wanted to scream at them to stop but i knew they would not listen to me because i'm not really there friend or anything. Now one of my closet friends has started. (and she swears she's stopped but i can't beleive her) I don't know how to handle this. How can I make sure she stops? With out taking her to a therapist or telling her parents or something (because she trusts me not to tell them) and most of all how can I handle this news?

It's a subtle cry for attention. Most people go emo because there is an overwhelming need to be different, and thusly quite noticeable; some want a lot of attention though. A large part of it is probably peer pressure from the fact that it's so acceptable in that particular scene. It's partly the same reason gang bangers want to get arrested and why athletes want to win etc. She really just needs to grow up and stop being goth and focus her energies on another, more positive form of getting attention since she can't seem to be emo without the hurting part.

Maybe she should take up tennis?

Alot of people don't understand cutting, I'm assuming this is what you're talking about? You don't really spell it out. Emo does not mean you hurt yourself. Emo people randomly do as much as ANYONE else. You need to know that her being Emo, is not WHY she cuts.
Now, this may sound sarcastic, but I'm not being. You don't have to understand why she cuts, or why anyone cuts. You may never understand. I don't understand why people murder...so what. She needs help regardless. Don't make her try to explain, its the worst thing you can do. Don't tell her to stop, that won't help, and she needs professional help. She will get anxious if you get on her and will mocut more.(I know)
Talk to the school counselor. Ask her to please go with you, that you will stand by her no matter what. But tell her, this is bigger then her and she needs adult help.here is a online site for people who are trying to stop, maybe she can use this site.

And ps. It is not about a cry for help. Most self harmers hide there scars.

Cutting is like a drug. Ppl often medicate themselves for depression with drugs like marijuana, alcohol, etc. When a person cuts themself, the neurotransmitter dopamine is released in the brain which makes the person "feel better."
