I am trying out for my freshman year football team and I know I need to be very strong for a runningback. Can you please tell me great workouts for my leg and calf muscles? I need to get these muscles very strong as soon as possible!!! Thanks!

Squats for upper-leg strength, calf raises and jumping exercises for calf strength. The jumping exercises are especially important, because they develop an explosive stride, which is necessary for a running back.

Squats will help. Make sure you wear a squat belt, and ALWAYS have a spotter. Also, stay back on your heels to give you more hip flexibility. And dont lean forward when you do it. It'll kill your back.

Powerclean works, and once again wear a belt, have a spotter, and stay back on your heels.

Weighted lunges. Will make your butt sore like no other, but will strengthen your leg muscles pretty good.

-squats will give you immediate results (but more immediate soreness) and make sure your form is perfect

-calf raises will also give good results, but make sure not to get a charliehorse

-running always helps (sprints, not distance- this will weaken your max strength)

-for a leg-strenthening cardio workout, try an eliptical machine on a pretty high resistance

-jerks and cleans

-lunges with weights or med balls

i learned all of this in therapy.
go on your tiptoes and come back down as many times as wanted or until tired.
raise up your leg upward when on your back with ankle/wrist weights. you can also do this when on your side, stomach and with a leg crossed over.
running is also a favorite when i want to build muscle. i have to control my legs or it doesn't count.

i hope this works. if not, try playing soccer or something that involves a lot of movement and running.

lunges and frog jumps are great. they give your legs a killer workout.

i know i'm a girl and you probably aren't going to believe what i'm saying, lol, but i was a cheerleader and i had to have strong legs too :-)
