When travelling in Europe I noticed many american people displaying a canadian flag on their luggages/hats/body,etc.
If they are proud of their country why don't they show?

"The Random Blonde" and "Blue-Rain"
I like both of your answers , but I agree with "Blue-Rain" except for the clothes, they were not from roots, and the canadian flag were put on their clothes by them selves!

Everybody knows Canadians as nice peace-keepers, (like me, lol) so maybe these people though they'd have no trouble if they said they were Canadian,
but they could have really were Canadian, i know as much as you Americans like to think we never leave our igloos but occasionally we do have to go out.
Or they clothing could have been from roots (lmao)

The Americans you saw are probably world travelers who go to other countries where they have been advised to keep a low profile...hence the apparent display of Canadian paraphernalia in their person. For instance, the luggage you mentioned - I'm sure these people use the same set of luggage whether they travel to Europe or the Middle East. Global tensions as they are now, there are other ways for us to show our patriotism than to display our flag colors (in our travels) which could only attract undue attention.

What the other guy said could also be true: These "Americans" could most likely be Canadians after all.

It could be the dangers we face going abroad. Even in Europe, there have been terrorist acts. Americans are targets and may not want to be easily identified. I'm fine with someone knowing I'm American, but I still would think twice about broadcasting it when outside of the US. Or some people's political opinions may follow with actions that separate them from our very country. Living in a haven for Democrat rhetoric, I see and hearing things to this nature regularly.

Because, being "proud" of a country that's not in the best of standing with may Europeans may not be in their best interests. Just as wearing a Crucifix into Afghanistan may not be the best idea. It doesn't mean the person isn't Christian or isn't proud of being one.

It's not a matter of being "proud", it's a matter of being smart and being safe. You don't need labels to be "proud" of something.

Besides, who knows, perhaps they are Canadians by genetics and Americans by residence.

Americans who travel may have come to realize that the USA is not well liked in the world because of their imperialistic politics. Also many Americans are percieved as dullards who don't know much about the world (I think 97% don't even have passports).

The USA is culturally void.

I personally wouldn't try to be Canadian, since I'm not.

I'm not happy with a lot of things USA has done, but I'm still proud to be an American.

One reason Americans don't have passports is because USA is the ONLY country where you can experience all sorts of things

I have no use for people that aren't proud of Being an American. We're the best nation on earth to live on. One thing most of the people wil ltell you is America is violent, but the truth is England has the highest crime rate in the world. don't believe me? google 'highest crime rate in the world" at any rate, i may not approve of our political actions on foreign soil, but America has a rich history and beautiful people.

Time being now, it's hard to be proud. I only stay proud because I know that my grandfather fought so hard to give this country the rights and liberties it has. You know, the ones everyone takes for granted? Yah. It's hard now. Especially amidst our decline. Don't you agree? But I still stand.
