(1) The OS manages hardware and software
(2) It runs applications
(3) It manages memory (cache)
(4) It accommodates printers, scanners and other peripheral devices
(This is just a barebones answer. Most of us computer users could write you a book on the subject but that would deprive you the pleasure of doing your own research which I am sure you are itching to do).
