Oh my gosh! What makes you think you are old and can't do whatever it is in this world that you would like to do? You have a lot of years left to accomplish anything you want to! There is no reason why you can't get whatever job it is that you want. Education isn't everything! Experience counts for so much! And if you want more education, there's plenty of time for that too. You would probably do better in college now because you have a little maturity and wouldn't take it for granted. And with your experience you should be able to get another printing job without a whole lot of trouble. And who on earth told you handy men aren't smart?? Give yourself some credit! A good handy man has to be able to trouble shoot and figure things out. It takes a smart person to do that. You can't be mindless and be a good handy man! Wow. You've got it bad. You need to get out of that slump! You said it...you're a smart guy. Now pick yourself up and get out there, and make whatever it is you want to do with the many years you have ahead of you happen! Don't waste any more time feeling down about whatever it is that happened that put you in the state of mind you're in. Now get going! And if there is some sort of hurdle in your past such as being fired, or laid off, or forced into early retirement, or whatever made you as down on yourself as you are...as you go forward tell yourself what I heard one time that helps me overcome. "I am not my past!"

Start with the real problem. At 52 you ought to be considering yourself a experienced young man rather than an old man. If you want to be a handyman do a few jobs reasonably or offer to do the job and pay you after its done. If the people are pleased and you do a good job as it sounds you can, you will get your money and a lot of recommendations also. Good handy men are always in demand.
When you believe in yourself, so will everyone else.
Good luck!

Damn dude, your making me feel old and I'm only 54 yrs. ANYBODY can do what they'd like in this day and age, and a good handy man is hard to find and plus you say your smart! If it's printing you love than search out a printing job It's a big world out here with plenty of printing jobs. If you are smart at 52yrs you must have something stashed for a rainy day and able to get things rolling again for yourself and it's you that's got to do something about your life no one else so pick yourself up and get the profession you want, stop wasting time my friend, Good luck, Les the glad to be a painter,

I do think you are a smart and clever person, and particularly good at solving problem, a diversified number and types of problems. so that is the kind of profession you need to seek out.
Let me give you this example. My neighbor lost his job with a large Auto company. He was earning about $55K per year plus the benefits. His job was routine and he hated to go to work, but his joy was to come home and "fix" everything around for the neighbors.
So left with virtually no hope and no job at 50, this man became disenchanted with life until one day about 2 years ago he happened to be doing normal light bulb replacement at a parking lot adjacent to the airport. Something hit him and he suddently became enthusiatic about Aircraft Repair.
He borrowed the money from SallieMae student loans and went to Pennsylvania to study to become a aircraft mechanic and a very sucessful one indeed he has become. Ge now earns much more than he ever did and he enjoys going to work every day.
I dont know what will intrigue you. But for sure, you have sold yourself short. This is a technological word, everything from Garage Doors to Pinball Machines is in need of a fellow like you. There is a great shortage of people like you what you need to do is either go to a technical school that prepare you for a job or take a job that will prepare you in a field you will enjoy, that is regardless of pay, take it. People like you earn well over the $60K per year and upwardly for sure.

Search for another job in the printing business if that is what you enjoy. Is there a health reason you are no longer doing that, or did you retire or get laid off? Printing companies are always needing good employees. I work in a plastic packaging company & we print plastic film so do not limit your self to the same type of printing job either, there are so many different forms of the same job.
Build a resume online (it is easy)on one of the many job search engines & check it daily for new postings.
Good Luck

Sounds like you are going through a mid life crisis.
Let's think about this for awhile. You can do anything you want to. You say your a smart guy, then use your head and come up with something you'd really like to do. I don't know your situation, but you should be established by now. so instead of worrying about what other people think, be more concerned about what you think.
You could do something like starting your own repair service. Or a lawn service business. Appliance repair, is another option.

People don't think of handymen as being smart. Wonder where they got that idea. How many carpenters can do automechanics, plumbing, glass cutting, floor laying, roofing, electronics, computer programming and agricultural activities knowledgeably(and there is scads I didn't mention)? You just have to own all the tools. They get a deal of a lifetime
