refinish them? Use a polyurethane varnish?

Pick an area that is not noticeable (maybe the floor in the closet) use 00steel wool, or 200 grit sand paper. Rub/sand until the surface looks very dull, then clean well with soft cloth dampened with mineral spirits. Apply a coat of polyurethane, your desired gloss....satin, semi, or high gloss. Let dry, and lightly sand and apply a second coat.
If this produces the desired result, then continue with the rest of the floor. Good Luck
