Have you checked with your local communitiy college about maybe taking some classes that will prepare you for something better?

My Dad ran printing presses all his life and he was smart, too.

First off you need to stop feeling sorry for yourself. Whining about you situation will not improve it. Secondly, your self-talk, ie; how you talk to yourself about your performance, achievements, and your personal value determine whether or not you create constructive motivation in your life. Without constructive motivation you will become hopeless, feel useless, and develop a bitter, resentful, and hostile attitude toward life. Third, develop new goals and objectives. One other thing, don't let the "me too" fools convince you that all is lost or hopeless. I'm 56 and retired from career I hated. I am now doing something I should have been doing years ago, working with my tools, just like you! Hope this helps.

I understand what you are going through. After 20 years I was laid off from my job with a financial institution. I didn't have any other skills. I went back to school and worked full time while I went to school at night. It wasn't easy but I got my degree and am now back in the business world. Go talk to one of the advisors at your local college. Perhaps they can give you an idea of where to go and what to do. You have a ton of potential. You just need someone to coax it out! Good luck!

Me too, and I'm 56 !
I was in the machining trade all my life - machinist, programmer, and then on into supervision. Now, all the jobs are gone... went out of business, moved to another state, (or out of the country, or sold out! Now, like you, I do handyman work! Frustrating is right!
