It means a sad, frowning face. When you take it literally, when someone frowns, it actually gives us a longer face because our cheeks sag.

When you hear someone saying "why the long face" they are simply asking why are you so sad? Don't be sad though. I think it is really wonderful that you ask questions so that you can learn new things. Take care

Being melancholy or sad. I guess because frowning pulls your muscles down and usually you associate sadness with looking down, which makes your face look long.
