get them? it's not a disease. it's an occurrence you don't expect.
an emotionally significant event or radical change of status in a person's life
the crises (plural) you're asking about can happen when you least expect anything to happen - sometimes in multiples one after the other or all at once.
suppose your spouse dies suddenly, OR your college age child dies instantly in a freak accident, OR your children have grown and married and moved far away and suddenly (it seems) you're all alone.

I think they're more mind than matter. Generally, a woman is considered to be in midlife crisis when she reaches menopause, experiences night sweats, mood swings, mild or severe depression, etc. It can happen psychologically at any age to anyone who sees themselves getting older and doesn't embrace it. Some men, stereotypically, buy a sports car, get a tattoo, or even pathetically have affairs, casting aside wives they perceive to be "older." Sad to see women over thirty trying so desperately to look too young, wearing clothes clearly intended for teenagers. Better to stay in good shape and develop good habits you can carry with you for a lifetime. It's really all just about identity and self acceptance, no matter what age you are. There's no need for a crisis when every year is cause for celebration.

Mid life crisis are caused by reaching middle age and realizing that you have more time behind you then in front of you. It 's kinda like a teenage identity crisis, only reverse. Men will try to prove to themselves and everyone around them that they are still desirable, and oftentimes seek the sexual company of younger women to prove that "he still has what it takes". Most of the time women are faced with losing their children to growing up and leaving the nest, which causes empty nest syndrome. Oftentimes they will flirt to make sure they still have what it takes. They will oftentimes try a new career, or a new man. It's just a rough time realizing that you are not as young as you used to be or want to be.
