From the example you gave, it sounds like you're looking for samples as opposed to remakes/covers. For example...

Sample: "Swahililand" by Ahmad Jamal was used in "Stakes Is High" by De La Soul.

Remake: "Cruisin'" originally sung by Smokey Robinson was covered by D'Angelo on his album "Brown Sugar."

THEN: She's Like the Wind" was a 1987 hit pop/rock song written and performed by actor Patrick Swayze alongside Wendy Fraser. The song demonstrated Swayze's previously unknown singer/songwriter talents.
