Is it the Sierra Nevada? or Rocky mountains?

Well, that depends on how far east they started from.
If they are coming all the way from the east coast, they would first have to cross the Appalachians somewhere along a line from Maine to Georgia, then the Rockies somewhere in western Montana/Colorado/New Mexico, and then the Sierra Nevada when they got to the Nevada/eastern California border area.
Of the two ranges you listed, they would definitely have to cross the Sierra Nevada - and possibly the Rockies also if they are coming from anywhere east of Denver.

If they're coming to Los Angeles, they have to cross the San Gabriels too!
