I added a tracking program to my "MYSPACE" page and I've noticed that the same IP address keeps checking out my site. Unfortunately the tracking system only provides a series of numbers (68.23.45.etc.) and identifies those numbers as the IP address. It then says "User Unknown". So I'm wondering if there's a way to identify this person by those numbers provided. Please help and thanks in advance!

You might be able to. Go to http://www.whois.net/ and type the IP numbers in. Most likely it's not going to tell you a lot, but it might tell you something interesting, like if it's a school IP, or something like that.

You can only identify a person from any IP address as much as identifying someone from a cell phone number. The IP addresses are owned by individual internet service providers (ISPs), which provide access to the individuals. You will need to contact the ISP in order to get further information (they usually will not release this information without a search warrant).

Most ISPs use a system of dynamic IPs, meaning that a user is assigned a different IP each time they sign on, and the IPs can go to different users at different times. Also, if the IP happens to be one of a proxy or public service (eg. library, net cafe), there will be no way to track it down as it will be like the phone number of a relay service or pay phone.

To search up the ISP associated with the IP address, go to http://www.arin.net (for American IPs) and search up the IP address. If ARIN does not have custody of that IP, they will point you to the correct organization with the information.

In the USA, without a court order, you cannot find out specific information from an IP address.

Those series of numbers, identifies your pc from anyone else. Do a google search for "IP tracer" or something of the like, and there will be heaps of online ip tracers...you can find out just about anything about them...
