This month we took our Quad-band Motorola V3 to New York ( from the UK ) that was on T-Mobile. We were unable to get a signal. On return to the UK, I was advised to have taken my other phone, a Tri-band also on T-Mobile and that would have worked in New York. Can anyone please give me some definitive advice here for the future? Cheers ....

you would only need a Tri band phone for the USA - however yoru Quad band phone should work in the USA as it is a Tri band phone with the addition of the extra frequency band for Japan, hence Quad band

I would check 2 things - 1st with your sim is setup for internation roaming which is the default anyway and 2 - I would check your phone and make sure that the Network search is set to "Automatic" and not manual

If this is all checks out either a Tri or Quad band mobile will work in America

A quad-band didnt work in the US? That is bizarre... It should have worked without a hitch...

T-Mobile uses GSM 1900 MHz for local stuff and GSM 850 MHz for roaming.

Their 3G coverage is using UMTS/HSDPA 1700 MHz and 2100 MHz

The V3 Quad Band runs on 850/900/1800/1900 MHz, so it should have been fine for both local and roaming GSM T-Mobile coverage.

The only trouble spots that have been listed for New York City is Grammercy Park - that is the only spot that T-Mobile service is very hard to get in the City itself.

tri band phones should work in the US - the fourth (quad) band is just another extra band for a different area. the only problem i can imagine that happened is your phone may have been locked from US frequencies. but that is usually a reverse problem - where US phones have to be unlocked to travel abroad. Europe doesn't use CDMA do they? It's all GSM. I believe the only places that CDMA is in use are Korea and North America
