Libba Bray has written two books in a series about a young girl that discovers she has inherited powers from her mother. Her mother is killed and she is sent to a boarding school. She struggles with using the powers to be reunited with her mother and the feelings that having the powers create. One title is Rebel Angels. Good series of books, I can't wait for the third!

philip pullman's dark materials trilogy. You'll love them. Also try The Redemption of Althalus by David and Leigh Eddings.
