Hey. I need to do an 8th grade animal testing persuasive paper. Please answer these to the best of your ability:

-96% of animal testing is cosmetics. How is this testing cruel? It's just makeup, not some horrendous pill. Why is it considered inhumane?

-How many animals died last year from animal testing and if I could see which species are used that would be great.

-What are the alternatives to animal testing? Are they more or less expensive?

-Has there ever been a case where animals where tested, given the OK, the product was released, and people died/were injured/ poisoned becuase they reacted differently than animals?

If you are for animal testing, throw as many questions at me as you can think of. I want to be prepared. If you are against it answer the arguments and theses questions.

Just reminding you this is an 8th grade level assignment, and some writing "OmG I Am AgAiNsT iT JuSt LiKe U!!11!! GiMmE ThE Pts LoL xD" will obviously not get 10 points.

Thanks!!

1) cosmetics also include how it will react when it gets in the eye. This means they also put the make up in the eyes.

2) Thousands of animals die every year because their experiment was over and the lab was getting new animals. Some animals only participate in one study and then are killed.

3) Human testing and scientific experiments. They are expensive but in the long run (since a lot of labs use monkeys) it can be cheaper

4) I'm not sure but I do know that there was a male birth control out. It lowered the sperm count for mice but not men. It was recalled after it had been sent out so it may have caused pregnancies.

5) i personally think animal testing isn't all that bad IF it is for that type of animal's sake (such as testing done on dogs to help improve a dog's health)

I will try to the best of my ability..sometimes I have trouble naming sources

-96% of animal testing is cosmetics. How is this testing cruel? It's just makeup, not some horrendous pill. Why is it considered inhumane?

::: this is cruel because the animals are kept in small cages and given only the necessities of life, the cosmetics are often applied to newborns and very young animals, and the cosmetics are often inserted INTO the animals eyes and mucous membranes (nose mouth etc.)
-How many animals died last year from animal testing and if I could see which species are used that would be great.

::you might want to do some statistical internet research on this one: however, please don't use any peta sites, they are generally inflamitory and filled with half truths.

-What are the alternatives to animal testing? Are they more or less expensive?

:::as animals and humans are VERY different genetically and biologically, anything tested on an animal often has no directly related reaction as it would to a human..there are often humans who would volunteer to test anything given a little bit of cash is offered..considering the amount of money it takes to feed and house animals and paying the manpower to properly care for the animals (cleaning cages, potty walks, feeding and watering), the cost comparison can only prove that the cost of paying a person some small compensation can only mean the testing costs are reduced.

-Has there ever been a case where animals where tested, given the OK, the product was released, and people died/were injured/ poisoned becuase they reacted differently than animals?

:::I'm sure there are for cosmetics although I can't historically prove them...but there are lots of medicines that will prove this out...Phen-fen (caused heart attacks and stroke, and caused some who didn't die to have lifelong heart disease), and several recent rheumatoid arthritis medicinces have killed/caused lifelong complications or nearly killed many patients.

I won't give you the link here because I was given a violation and my post was removed for linking to the PETA(people for the ethical treatment of animals) homepage. You can find it easily yourself. I am definitely against animal testing when another method can be used that does not harm an animal. I consider mice and rats to be vermin so I am not opposed to experiments with them. Canaries were once used in coal mines to detect if gases were present. If the canary died then they knew to haul it out of there. You might try emailing some of the major cosmetics companies and asking how they test their products. You might try dog food companies like IAMS and ask them also. Good luck and hope I was helpful.

One fact that people don't like: Animal testing (Medical) has increased the average human lifespan by 23.5 years. That's almost a quarter century!
