My mother is an RN and smoked for many years and did quit about ten years ago just because of the fact that, yes, being in the health profession, you should know better. It was a matter of image and grand-kids being around her that made her quit.
I smoked for over 20 years and just recently quit myself with the help of a fairly new medication called Chantix. I have been smoke free for two weeks now and have had to learn a lot of behavioral changes in order to do it. Stress can cause one to want to smoke, but yes, there are other ways to cope. Sometimes just having a good support system really helps!!!

Denial. I have friends who are nurses, and they smoke. When I quit, they all congratulated me, then gave excuses as to why they wouldn't quit right then. One of them even smoked when she was pregenant, and said that it didn't really do that much harm to the baby! What bullshit! I work in the restaurant business, which is known to be very high stress, plus it has lots of exposure to all kinds of vices, and I don't need to smoke or drink to deal with it, and I would never put my child's life in danger just to feed an addiction.

Because it's an addiction. When they started, they probably weren't involved in a medical career. And now, years later they're still smoking and can't stop. It doesn't matter who the person is or what their profession is. It is all about the addiction

They are just people like you and me! Their "job" just happens to be in the health care profession, but that really has nothing to do with their own personal habits... we ALL know smoking is bad, but some like it anyway! It has nothing to do with their chosen profession.

For the same reasons anyone else does even though they know. Health care workers are just people doing a job, they are just as susceptible to weaknesses and habits as the rest of us.
