Despite what these other people are saying, DISABLING the component WILL help your computer. Here's why. When a computer boots up, it allots all computer hardware a certain amount of resources (you can see it by clicking the Resources tab in the hardware properties). By disabling the hardware via the control panel, you free up the resources that were reserved for it. Go ahead and disable it. You can do that to all the hardware you don't use. Like your infrared port.

Generally, removing an internal modem shouldn't really cause any speed improvement on your computer - at least the hardware change won't. However, the software drivers for your modem do take up a small percentage of system resources, although I don't think that removing them will give you any noticeable change in performance. If you do wish to remove the internal modem, I recommend that you delete the software drivers for it before you remove the hardware - this will ensure that your computer will not try to continue to load those drivers in after your modem has been removed.

An external modem, uses it's own controller; the internal uses the CPU.

if the internal modem isn't being used then removing it won't help.

Nope, if its not being used it wont slow anything down.
