Before using boric acid, read this
http://www.nanotech.wisc.edu/CNT_LABS/MSDS/Acids/MSDS%20Boric%20acid%20powder.htm
In particular, read section three, Hazards Identification. The potential health effects are nothing to call "perfectly safe", especially for infants and small children.

If the ants are in the house, use a mixture of one part white vinegar to 2 parts water. Spray in walls, counter tops, floors, etc ANYWHERE they are crawling. DO NOT WIPE IT OFF,LET DRY NATURALLY within a few days they will be gone. (You have to keep spraying until they are gone) Once they are totally gone, you can spray about 2-3 times a month and they will NOT come back. As to outside,I found a product called Scotts Super S Max,it REALLY worked on the Fire Ants. Also

well, I had an ant problem a couple weeks ago and I have a dog and 2 cats, i used a bug bomb. Just take your pet to a friends house or to work if you can or to the kennel for the day. By the time you get home it will smell bad, so just open up the windows, and trust me this might sound like a lot of work but it worked for me, sorry its the best Ive got. You can purchase a bug bomb or ant bomb at any hardware store.Like Ace or something like that.

A woman asked this a day or two ago. If you go to the "search for questions" at the top of your screen it will give you lots of answers to prevent ants from getting into your home. Both children and pet safe.

There is something called boric acid that you can use and it is safe around pets. We use it around our cats and dogs. I don't know where you live but in California you can buy it in a chalk form and all you do is outline your cupboards with it. If you want to e-mail me I can help you get some.

Find their nests and pour boiling water on them!
MUAHAHAHAHAH!
Seriously....that'll work.
Just make sure you do it in YOUR yard.
Your neighbors probably won't think too highly of you running around in THIER yards dumping pots of boiling water on their nicely manicured lawns whilst cackling maniacally about the destruction that you're wreacking!
