Making your own website is not a simple process. You will have to conceptualize it, develop it, and then host it.

Once you have an idea what you want your own website to be like, you should start developing it. You can approach that by tools such as Dreamweaver, Nvu, or Frontpage, or by learning HTML. In any case, I suggest starting with the tutorials at http://www.webmonkey.com.

After you have developed your website, search for a web host. There are many good ones out there that offer services for as low as about $5/mo. If you really can't pay that, you can find a free web host, but they will often force advertisements on your website and not meet your needs. Also, you can host it by yourself, but that requires competency in administering web servers (which is a very broad topic). The web hosts should be able to guide you on the details.

I guess the question to counter your own is "What kind of website do you want?" You have to sit and think of what kind of information that you want to place onto that site and that will help you in designing what it will look like. Take a look at some of your favorite sites that may be similar to what you want and take note of why they seem to function so well. Is it the drop down menus? Is it how it is laid out? Is it the fancy graphics? Etc.

Once you can answer those questions, do a sketch of what you would like your site to look like.

Finally, decide whether you want to code the site yourself (don't worry... it's not as scary as it sounds) or you want someone else to do it for you. If you are doing it yourself, then pick up a good book on HTML. I used a book called "How to Do Everything with HTML & XHTML" but I'm sure that there are lots of other good references to teach how to write your own code. HTML is a great way to make a website if you want a basic site to display information.

If you want something a bit more complicated, then you'll want to do it in Flash. I do not recommend this though for a beginner. Flash allows you to create fancy graphics that move within the website itself. Pretty? Usually. Necessary? Not always. It really depends on what kind of site you want to make.

If you really want to make a Flash site (after you are comfortable with HTML of course...) then I recommend grabbing another book on Flash. I used "Hands on Training Macromedia Professional 8." You may also want to consider taking a class at a local community college. That's usually a good way to jumpstart the process if you are not great at self-teaching.

I hope this helps.
