Economically (poverty), politically (war) and environmentally (global warming) - the world seems to be in a downward spiral. Is there a way we can change this before we suffer consequences from which we cannot recover? Are we on the right path or de we need to change something? Externally do we need to reconsider Government policy? Education Systems? and personally do we need to reconsider our attitude, our beliefs, our pride, our spirituality?

I do agree that we are in a very precarious position. I think that we all need to begin with ourselves! As far as the environment goes, we can do small things to make a big difference. For example, if every house in America changed their light bulbs to those energy efficient spiral bulbs, we reduce the CO2 by a huge amount. I think that if we begin to change the way we think, then we can make a difference. I am a teacher and I think it's not the education methods that need changing. The teachers that are not doing a good job should really not be there. Finally, I think that our nation is in trouble spiritually. I guess that I gave up on organized religion a long time ago, but I still consider myself to be spiritual. I really don't like the way that many religions condemn those that have different beliefs. If there is a God up there ( which I believe there is) it seems to me that he/she/it would accept anyone who is a kind, caring person. My two cents!

There are many things we can do on a personal level as well as educating people about issues that need to be addressed.
1. recycle
2. buy local products - it's amazing what is being made locally but we are sold things from third world countries where production costs are cheaper
3. conserve water and energy
4. grow your own produce or join a coop that grows food locally - tastes better also.
5. if you must buy produce from other countries - try to buy fair trade and pesticide free produce
6. encourage children to walk to school (unless really unsafe) or ride their bikes - good exercise and better than you wasting gas sitting in the parking lot - only effective if school is less than a mile from home!
7. trade and swap home items and clothing. Many places have used clothing stores as well as household items Just because it's not brand new doesn't mean it's not useable.
8. take the bus, walk or carpool whenever possible.
There are many different ways to change the world and most of them start with us doing simple things that can make a big difference. We can't change the situation in third world countries overnight - but if we learn more about microcredit and other ventures that allow people to provide for themselves instead of waiting for charity - it makes a difference.
There are lots of websites to give you more information on making a difference. if you type in reduce, reuse & recycle into a search engine - you will be amazed at the information available.
