I have thought about this a lot, because if we could find out how to learn than we could all become more intelligent beings.
The principles I work with are as follows:
To learn you must listen
To listen you must be interested
To be interested you must care
To care...welll this is where I am stuck
Why care?

Maybe it is better like this:
To learn you must understand
To understand you must comprehend,
To comprehend must pay attention
To pay attention you must care
and to care you must benefit

I have always believed that people learn to love to learn as children, or they never learn it. A child learns when the child is praised for learning. The first teacher a child has in a class can/often does set the future into motion by being a happy, caring, loving teacher......who praises and praises children for all THEY DO, and rather plays a neutral tune to when the child does not do well. Children love to be noticed and praised........we all do this as adults, but if we expect good to come from learning, may be wired into our brains by our parents and/or our FIRST teacher. Children listen to really hear. Once they hear what is expected of them, children reach for the praises (that is the caring, and the interest).......if this does not happen, many children lose their lust for learning all together.

You care because it benefits you. I don't believe you can learn everything much from listening. I'm not sure you can learn much at all from listening, for that matter. What's to be heard but the versions and ideas of other people? People have their own motives. Pardon the contradiction, but ever HEAR the phrase "Don't believe what you hear and only half of what you see?"
To learn you must observe...

Learning is a natural instinct in animals. Using the senses we have, we attempt to understand our world and how to be a part of it.

You do not learn to learn. It is an ability you are born with. If one had to learn to learn that would imply that he does not know how to learn. With would show the person lacking of any way to learn, including learning itself.
