Do PS2 games work with on PS3 sytem?

I have a relative who has a PS2 system but will be getting a PS3 system sometime. I really know very little about this stuff. I want to get him a game now to play on his PS2 system but I didn't want to get him it if he wasn't going to be able play it on his PS3 system. So will a PS2 game work on a PS3 system? Thanks.

unlike the 360, the ps3 is backwards compatible with every game

All that i know is that PS1 games work on PS2 but i am pretty sure they do thanks for your question though!
