I think Iago's importnace lies in the fact that he is the one pulling all the strings of the other characters. He is the only proactive character. All the other characters, especially Othello and Desdemona, spend the entire play reacting to Iago's actions. They never do anything truly independent.
The entire play centers around Iago's plan to destroy Othello. Iago manipulates Desdemona into actions that make her appear to be unfaithful, he manipulates Othello into being jealous, and he forces his wife help him in his plan. You can clearly see all other characters' actions as responses to Iago's actions. Iago is the only character with independent action.

Iago is the CENTER of the action in the play. If you think about it, Iago is the only character who has significant scenes with ALL of the other central characters: Othello, Desdemona, Emilia, Casio, and Roderigo. All of the major plot points in "Othello" revolve around Iago.

I think so. He is the most complex and the chief protagonist. He is a fascinating character and one of the best written and his gift of insinuation and deception and his way of playing people off of one another is utterly convincing and deeply Machiavellian.
