I have a percentage boer goat and I want to show him in Junior Livestock Competitions next year. The thing is, he has these things on his neck called wattles. I need to know if I can show a goat that has wattles because I've been to some livestock shows and I noticed that none of the other goats had them. I didn't know if the wattles would make a difference or not. Does anybody else even have a goat with waddles? Do you know if I could show my goat?

Wattles are fine for showing. Some people prefer goats without wattles for showing because they break up the line of the throat latch, but there are no rules against showing a goat with wattles and many people do. Personally I like the way wattles look on a goat, but there are some breeders who simply don't like them and will snip them off at birth.

Some goats have wattles and others do not so it shouldn't be a problem in the show ring. If you are showing through 4-H or FFA you could contact your project leader just to make sure. If not, don't hesitate to ask an experienced livestock competitor or a Boer goat breeder/judge.

I have never shown boar goats but I did show dairy goats. I did show goats with wattles. Its a natural thing, some have them and some don't.
