Can you suggest an analogy to something that seems bad in isolation but when you look at it as part of a system you realize that it is good? For example: A defence attorney seems like an accomplice to a criminal if you look at him in isolation. But when you look at him as part of the justice system, you realize that a defence attorney is actually something good.

Any similar analogies?

To be extreme: a criminal seems bad in isolation, but without the criminal, many members of the justice system would be out of jobs.

But, to be more realistic: In Microsoft Windows, there is a command-line program you can run, which ERASEs a file. Used by itself, it can ERASE a very important or even essential file - like, say, your note reminding yourself of your spouse's birthday (or even, if you know where to find it, a file that will keep Windows from booting after the next time you shut down your computer)! As part of the Windows System, though, you realize, ERASE is a very good and useful thing to have around.

The shark streaks upward at an alarming speed, jaws open. In less than a second he has the baby seal in his mouth, the ocean made pink with the dying seal's blood. A bad thing?

In fact, without sharks and other top-level predators, the balance of nature would be completely thrown out of whack. They feed on mid-level predators in the ocean, keeping their numbers at a level that allows low-level fish to have a chance for survival. These are the fish that seabirds and water birds feed on. So when viewed from the perspective of the system, the shark's deadly attack is a necessary, beneficial act. A good thing.

A near-death experience in isolation seems bad. If seen as a catalyst to a view of a new lease on life, it could be seen as a good thing.

Just about anything bad in life... At first, you think it's horrible... Then you realize that without the bad, you wouldn't recognize the good.
