Well, they are changing there in Germany and tend to follow the American example of elaborate parties with goodie bags for the guests. Not all agree though. The traditional birthday, as I know it, has relatives over and maybe the neighbors. Mom bakes several different pies. Games are played. I've never had a candle lit on my pie. Some never brought presents, it was simply a time to visit and have a good day.
The adults don't make a big deal of it. Generally the same with lots of different pastries and pies. Many bring flowers, a bottle of wine or champagne, pralines in a box.

I don't know about now, but my parents or grandparents did not do the gift thing. When my brother was a child he would get a special treat like fruit. (he was born there would be in his 60's now) He would get a new birthday outfit, and mom would make his favorite food.As far as a bunch of kids coming over that did not happen. Don't know how it is now though. My parents would go to the local bar and dance and have a few drinks and many toasts to the person having the birthday.
