The most important thing is to first use skin care products that will reduce the oilyness of your skin BEFORE you apply the foundation, color etc.
An option would be to try Mary Kay's 3 in 1 Cleanser and Moisturzier for combination to oily skin. I know several people with VERY oily skin that would swear by this product. And you could also use an additional product called Oil Mattifer that controls oil for up to 8 hours. The products may seem a little high up front but they will last you close to six months.

find something suited for you skin type. you can do this by talking to someone that works at your favorite makeup counter, even some brands have online assistants and you can chat via IM with an expert or you can just read product descriptions. i find it's better to talk to someone though so you can tell them everything you're have trouble with, exactly what you want, and everything about your skin and then they can pick what is best suited for your skin type. i use MAC. they have tons of products and are the people are very helpful. it may be a bit expensive to start out but the results are well worth it. they have blot papers and excellent blot powder. if i could recommend you anything for oily skin it would be their blot powder. it comes loose or in a compact. i am a new customer to make but i am absolutely loving it. i use the blot powder compact and it is amazing i know of a lot of other people that love it too. it's not really make up because it is very sheer but you can use it to set your makeup or foundation so it will stay put better and last longer and you can also use the blot powder to get rid of oil throughout the day. careful not to use too much though and just dab on a little bit at a time...don't smear it on to your face, i heard that could dry out your skin. if you don't like the products you get from MAC simply take them back within 30 days. Good luck!

I have the same problem you do! Fortunately, there are simple steps we can take to have glowing healthy skin! First step is to take good care of your skin with three easy steps: cleanse, tone, and moisturize. Yes, it doesn't matter what your skin type is, it's very important to always moisturize. Just find a lightweight moisturizer (Artistry makes a great cleanser, toner, and moisturizer, as do Clean&Clear, Neutrogena, etc.). Powder foundations or cream to powder foundations that help reduce/control shine work best with oily skins as they help provide a matte finish without looking too overdone. Try Maybelline's Dream Matte Mousse in your shade- it's only a couple of bucks and a GREAT foundation! I love my little jar :) Once you put it on, you'll probably have no need for loose powder, but if you use liquid makeup (there are some good ones out there for us oily-skinned people too), then be sure to dust some on. Keep oil-blotting sheets (such as those from Clean&Clear) handy, along with some pressed powder. Touch up during the day as appropriate. Voila! You have gorgeous shine-free, glowing skin! Hope that helps :)

Look for makeup designed for your skin type. First and foremost you should have a good skincare regimen that is designed to control oil (like facewash, toner, moisturizer, etc.). Look for products that are non-comedogenic (won't clog pores and cause breakouts).
Sephora.com is a great beauty site and you can search for products based on your skin type. I shop there all the time.
Even go to the mall and go to a cosmetics counter and get a skin consultation.
Powders absorb oil/control shine, and you can buy blotting papers for on-the-go touch-ups.
Edit: The person on here who says that oily skin is created by not moisturizing enough is only partially correct. Oily types do exist and yes it is important to moisturize, but do NOT use a heavy moisturizer. It's not necessary. If you never moisturize then yes your skin will create excess oil, but that's not really your skin's concern.

Ideally, none. But, try Bare Escentuals Mineral makeup. You can buy the starter kit for around $50, and it has everything (brushes, foundation, blush and a finishing powder.) Just make sure to wash your face very well, and use a good thick moisturizer. The reason that faces get oily is because the skin is too dry and your face creates oil to moisturize it. Then, apply the makeup. It is SO light and natural looking. I've been a dedicated customer for years!

I would get a cream-to-powder foundation, and be sure to get it in an oil free formula. Always carry powder, and try to use talc-based products, depending on how oily your skin is.
Also, that Bare Minerals works pretty well so long as you don't cake it on. When it gets hot it will melt off if it is applied very heavily.

A foundations that is oil-free always helps. Plus, you should get those clean and clear oil-blotting paper sheets. They works wonders! They are awesome. Just during the day, if your skin gets a little oily, pull out one of those papers and blot your face with it. I love em'.

Good question. I have mixed skintype. Meaning in winter, it gets normal [sometimes dry] where as when it's hot, it tends to get oily. So I just put on my normal make-up & sit infront of an AC.
