Merle Haggard rules! We all know (if your a classic country fan) that there's almost a countless amount of great artists that has graced us with their presence through the years, but there can be only one greatest of them all. If you ask the majority of the top country singers today who has influenced them, Merle Haggard will be in the top 10 of all of them, guaranteed.

oh yeah i love old country songs like hank williams, kitty wells, patsy cline, george jones, loretta lynn, tammy wynette( god she was amazing), oh there are so many. i loved the duets with conway and loretta. they were a great pair. and barbara mandrell, she is my role model and i'm in college. she is one of my absolute favorite entertainers of all time. reba mcentire was also great in the early part of her career, she's done so well too and is still going strong. i love the kendalls' 'heaven's just a sin away'. they were a good duet. what can i say? i'm sucker for the classics. today it seems that there's no real country songs with traditional country sounds. there's rascal flatts and carrie underwood for example. while they're all great singers and performers they're not country. they don't have that twang thang. they don't look or sound like true country, like buck owens or george strait. country today is more pop, there's very few who still sing old classic country. i love charlie pride, june carter, red sovine, the statler brothers, dolly parton, porter wagoner, the oak ridge boys, johnny cash, alabama, ernest tubb, lynn anderson, kris kristofferson....god nothing beats old country classics.

Dolly Parton is my idol! It's amazing how many people don't realize what a prolific songwriter and recording artist she is - every time the Whitney Houston recording of 'I Will Always Love You' is played, Dolly Parton makes money - and also when anyone else performs or records that ( or any one of her thousands of incredible songs!). Check out her autobiography (I can't remember the title) on an audio book - she reads her book - really talks her book - out loud and it is just wonderful to listen to her speak.
Heartsongs is one of my favorite CDs of hers.
Message to Dolly from this fan: I will always love YOU!

I am a huge Merle fan, but I love the outlaws and most artists that are not so manufactured. I don't believe a true artist needs all of the wardrobe and makeup and flashing lights. I would have to say that my favorite songs are Amanda (Don Williams), Sing Me Back Home (Merle Haggard) and Luckenback Texas (Waylon Jennings).

I am not a fan of the oldies but growing up in the 70's my dad was and we used to have to listen to the ones you mentioned and Kitty Wells, Red Foley, Webb Pierce and others. One of our vacations was to the Grand Old Opry(the original building) There used to be a country and western place that had an outside stage and picnic tables and just about every Sunday we had to pack a lunch and go down for the concert. It was all of the oldies you and I mentioned(minus the dead ones) My dad had bought an album and got it autographed every time.

Yes, I love Patsy Cline. I don't really care for a lot of the modern day country.
