I bought some about a month ago. I have found that if you put milk on it, then go get ready for the day by the time you get back it's usually soft enough to chew up.
P.S. Most of the box is still in the cupboard.

yes it will soften up. let it sit for a few minutes in the refrigerator. with milk in it....
and you can add hot water and microwave it ,.. like hot cereal.
then add milk when it is thick..../soft..
