It is short for Wireless Fidelity. It is more related to Hi-Fi, which means a very modern, sophisticated piece of instrument. Hence, Wi-Fi is a sophisticated piece of technology AND it is wireless!!

WIreless FIdelity. It's a play on the old term HiFi, which meant HIgh FIdelity.

I actually don't know, but I know LAN stands for local area network (like for homes) and WAN sands for wide area network (businesses)
