The storyline was to move back to New Jersey & remarry her ex husband.
I'm reading that her & Tony Shaloub wanted more money and she's the only one to make good on the promise to leave if they didn't get it.

The character decided to go back to her ex-husband and moved back east with her son Benjy. I never did hear the exact reason the actress left the show.

I think the rumor was that the actress who played Sharona wanted more money. She either quit or was replaced.
