Well, it's mostly about marketability on the MLS's side of the situation. As for Beckham, we'll never know for sure what his intentions are. But anyway, I think it's a great move. It's a great chance for the MLS to expand its marketability, get itself some exposure, and hopefully new supporters as well. It's also a great opportunity for Beckham to earn money and help a young soccer nation grow. Who knows if this whole thing will become a good thing or end up a bad thing, but I think we've got to do something. We'll just have to see what happens, and hopefully good things will happen with this.

first, this is really old news. Answer is yes and no. Professional sports is a business. The owners don't buy the teams to lose money. Beckham will bring more money to the Galaxy. They will sell more tix. They already have. I know i live next door to the stadium. They will sell more merchandise. Soccer will become more popular overall which will bring in more money.
It is not only a marketing ploy tho. Beckham is still above MLS calibur. He will be one of the best players in the league when he arrives. He will help the Galaxy tremendously.

David Beckham is an overrated athlete and his arrival to the MLS is nothing but a publicity stunt. Yeah the guy is good looking and a fashion icon, but other than some amazing free kick scores every now and then, his game sucks. He has even been labeled as a player with no passion.
In my opinion, it is offensive to put him in the same sentence as Pele who's still recognized by many as the greatest player ever.

Boost the sport? soccer does not need any help. what needs help is the style and coaching even players in this country MLS boring, US national team boring What they should have done is used all that money to buy young talent from brazil, argentina and other latin countries, euro good soccer for that reason. also get some coachs from holland , germany, south america Beckham move good investment money wise, bad investment for the youth.

More people will purchase tickets just to watch him play, but I doubt they will get any valuable return back on the investment in terms of financial gain (due to extra tickets being sold) or a championship.
Beckham is past his prime. Still good to be sure, but he's an old man now.
