Hi!
Oh my goodness!! What a dilemma!
I am so pleased for you, your pregnancy is GREAT news!
However, I've absoluely no idea what kind of advice to give you I'm afraid!
You've obviously researched it very well with the gum and patches.
You seem very intelligent, so there's absolutely no point whatsoever in giving you any kind of 'smoking is bad for the baby' lecture - although I bet you get a couple tonight!
All I can say is do your best and try really hard - I think the fact that you've cut down by over 50% is awesome and you should give yourself a big pat on the back for that.
All the best with the pregnancy, you sound like you'll be a brilliant Mummy!!

Hi!
Don't take my answer too harsh. I am responding from my own experience. I used to smoke since high school and when I got pregnant the first time I did cut down a lot but I still had to have one or two a day and then at least a few times a week. So really I never quit. Then after 6 years I tried to get pregnant again and it didn't work for me for 6 month which was very strange as my body is very fertile (LOL). So I thought to myself that if I will quit smoking so my baby is smoke free I will get pregnant. So I did. After 4 month I was pregnant with my second girl. I didn't smoke for 4 years!!!
I had a son 10 month ago and I just started smoking again about a month ago. And not planing on quiting yet. I will but not yet.
Why am I telling you all that??? Simply because smoking is psycological addiction and if someone says it is otherwise can be half way wrong. Yes, nicotine is adictive but you can stop whenever you are ready to stop. Slowly but surely!!! First, tell yourself just like I did, that you want your baby that you were trying for for so long to be healthy and nothing else will stop you from quiting. They cut down the amount!!! And I mean really cut down to 2-3 a day. Plus go to light cigarettes!!! That's the first thing you do. Then slowly cut down to even less. Make it as a reward for yourself that you get at the end of the day or in the morning when you want it the most to praise yourself for quiting!!! The very important moment is to take your mind away from it. Find something that you like to do or go baby things shopping just to forget about it. And then it will be very easy to just stop. Just say that it was enough. Because when your baby will be born can you leave him/her alone to go for a smoke? or you will be taking him/her with you ? Do you want your baby to smell it on you ? Remember second hand smoking?
Well I am trying to encourage you now. The most important part is that you have to be ready to quit. I never went to see the doctor about it as all they do is callect money from your visits!!! and they don't help.
Well if you need anything just let me know. Take care now.

First of all, most women don't even find out that they're pregnant until about 5-6 weeks. STOP....you have tried to get pregnant for 3 years. HELL-O don't do anything to mess it up! Don't ween yourself off, you just need to stop cold turkey. I smoked before I got pregnant (both times) and I just quit as soon as I found out I was expecting. It can be hard but you have to think about what's more important to you and have the willpower to just say no. Also, try not to be around friends or family who smoke, it will make it easier. Have them smoke outside or step to the side (if you are outside) and smoke. Best wishes.

Congratulations on becoming pregnant, well done you've waited a long time for this. What a dilemma your in especially when you know all the right answers, it's putting it into perspective really, your needs or the babies needs.
Giving up smoking is very difficult, perhaps consider acupuncture, or hypnotherapy, good luck and I hope you find some inner strength to help you.

when i found out i was pregnant i went to see the doctor, they put me on patches, but someone said they are worse as the nicotine goes straight into the blood stream (this was enough to scare me) so i went back to the doctors who said smoking is better as the body breaks down the chemicals before reaching the baby, personally i would say to you...(as a smoker myself who struggled with nicotine throughout my pregnancy and am struggling to quit now) please think of the baby, you have been trying so long for this life, don't you want to give it the best start? try disttracting yourself when you feel a craving coming on, a nicotine craving only lasts 10 mins, walk around the babies nursery during the 10 mins, it may help.
i ended up smoking throughout my pregnancy, she's nearly 2 years now and i wish i quit when i was pregnant!

THINK OF THE BABY !!!!!! research what smoking does to the fetus, THAT ALONE ought to shun any good souled person from smoking anywhere near anyone with kids ever again. also research what its doing to YOU ! i herd the radio say one day that if you stop smoking right now, your taste and smell enhances more than 50 % in just two weeks!!! stop now and your breathing becomes easier and your body will get more oxygen, giving you more " life".within several days.... so look it up. and if you still cant stop. the least you can do is slack off as much as possible, and after your not pregnant anymore get the patch or gum and support group. definatly stop smoking.

I quit many years ago with cough drops.
Before I found out that I was pregnant, the taste when combining Halls (any flavor) cough drops and tobacco made me sick. So I guess I basically conditioned myself to not smoke. Unfortunately, I can't use Halls cough drops without getting sick too.
Good luck! I hope you are successful. You are doing a good thing for you and your baby!

Go smoke one last time and really enjoy it. Then throw away whatever is left and never look back. I know it's hard, but I did it and so can you. I know this isn't very positive sounding, but once the morning sickness kicks in you really won't be in the mood to smoke anymore anyways. Good luck.
