The AIM client (Like most IM clients) do not need a browser to function.
Tell her to clear the Resolve Cache.
Start> Run> cmd> ipconfig /flushDNS

It could be a number of reasons...

1. Their homepage is down, try going to a different address.

2. Their firewall is blocking access. Check your security center.

3. Their browser settings are wrong.. Go to tools>internet options and click on the connections tab. Click on the set up button and go through the steps.

AIM and the other devices connect through different ports and using different settings.. So I am guessing 1 or 3

If these don't work post back..

you need to check your firewall, such as zonealarm and or the built in firewall if you are running windows xp. also if running internet explorer open internet explorer open tools, internet options, connections, lan settings and make sure automatically detect settings is checked.
if all else fails, go to mozilla.org and download and install firefox.
it is a web browser that is free and is much safer than internet exlorer. installing a new browser might prompt a firewall to ask you to let it access the internet, or it might detect your internet settings on its own. Good luck
