They ARE a lot alike. However, with a thought you can think something like---Man she's gotta loud mouth, and there is in no way that could be an intention. An intention is an action that you plan on achieving in the future. So I'd say the difference between them is that an intention is a verb and a thought is a noun (please don't degrade me if I'm wrong--I think it's a noun:).

Thoughts can ramble on FOREVER (an do!) and never accomplish a thing. Intention is setting one's thoughts in a certain direction often to reach a goal. All the crazy thoughts that try to crowd out the intention are ignored (can't stop thoughts, but you can ignore them!) Those few people who have managed this type of discipline have accoplished great things!

Thoughts are just that, a thought, however an intention involves the urge to go through with the thought.

Thoughts--cognition
Intentions--behaviour.

I don't think intentions can be an act of thought or a cognitive event.

When you are thinking about doing something, you are deciding whether or not to do it. When you intend to do something, you have already made a decision to do it.
