Totally unkown, even in the end, it left me thinking that he was working for somebody other than the Police, remember, a policeman wouldnt assasinate somebody, and he was closing the last link to his only way out, everyone else was dead, and he was only on suspension for two weeks anyway, with pay.

Mark was the second in command of the undercover agent division of the police force. When Martin Sheen was killed that made Mark the number one in charge. Matt Damons character wanted Mark to give him the identity of the undercover agent, Mark wouldn't and his superior fired him. So Mark out of a job and pissed off, goes and later kills Damons character, end of story.
