Waltz #2 is my life theme song. He has the most haunting voice and has written some of the most beautiful songs I am sure I will hear in my lifetime. If you don't know who he is I suggest starting with Either/Or. I wouldn't feel too bad downloading his albums, he died years ago and he wasn't close with his family, he was mad at his friends and there is a good chance his girlfriend (who gets the royalties I believe after fighting it out in court with his parents) killed him anyways. I think he would rather have people appreciate what he achieved than further inflate the pockets of the gold diggers he left behind!!
To the guy below me.... a little known fact for you... he didn't start doing heroin until after his first couple of albums. Needle in the Hay was written well before he had even tried it. Doesn't change that he did drugs but more people die from religion than heroin and in the end they are both simply coping mechanisms to get through life and you wouldn't hear people say too bad he believed in Jesus.

I've never heard of him but I won't be downloading any of his albums no matter how amazing he is.

Smith was fantastic. I was heart broken when I found out that he died. Everyone should take a good listen to his music. One of the best songwriters of our time.
