This is all just a matter of public perception. The Democrats know they were elected for the sole purpose of giving a fresh perspective, and leading the charge for a "new direction" in the war. The Democrats want to make it appear as if they are against the war and trying to bring it to an end so they can win the upcoming election. They are trying to pass a bill (which will be vetoed) that keeps the troops in Iraq until September 1, 2008, provided certain benchmarks are met. Even if the benchmarks are not met though, the bill allows for the u.s. to have 75,000 or more troops still in Iraq for counter-insurgency operations and to protect American assets. So I'm not happy about what the Dems are doing, because i know no matter how much anti-war rhetoric i hear from the Dems or what i see on television, i know this war isn't going to end in the near future.

What does this mean? To be perfectly honest, this is merely a political ploy to earn votes by appealing to the nation's desire to stop fighting.
There is honestly little that can be done at this point to speed up the situation witout causing more harm. If we just "leave and call it quits" the entire area will be in trouble and the failure will come back to haunt us in the future. How would you feel if your nation was turned upside down and then those who did the turning just threw up their hands and left you with the mess? I think that answer is self-explanatory.
So other than this solution, what do the Dems have in mind? That is what I would really like to know. There has been consistent talk of "Ending the War" but really what are their options? I am not saying that either the Dems or Reps are any better than each other (in fact I'm not a fan of any kind of political agenda) but for a party to do as you have stated as "forcing the issue of ending the war in Iraq" is pleading to the ignorant for votes.
If the average joe can't understand that this is a silly platform, then of course they will rally to the ridiculously silly cry of "End the War now!"
Seriously, folks. It's a horrible situation and one that we most certainly got into ourselves, but there is no way to quickly end the war. Period. The sooner we as a nation come to grips with this the better we will be and the sooner we can laugh at any claims that either party can make of making some kind of speedy progress with the Iraq issue.

Something needs to be done but I'm not so sure that completely pulling out is the right thing to do. And I say this as someone who was against this war from the beginning. I hate the fact we are there and I'm disappointed we started this war based on lies and grudges. But as much as I'm against this war and as much as I'd like to get our troops out of there, I have a hard time leaving them high and dry like we would. And quite frankly, that country is more of a potential threat now than it ever was before we invaded. My only reasoning for going ahead and pulling out is that deep down I know that eventually we will prematurely anyway and no matter how long we stay I'm not convinced that the goals will be reached.

It would have been nice if this war could end diplomatically but that's not going to happen. Yes, I know, dems voted for this war too but let's face it, they were given faulty intelligence. This has been a terribly expensive war in terms of lives lost, dollars spent and America's reputation.

No.
It only shows the Islamic militants/terrorists the division in the US and gives them hope that they will triumph in the end. The Dems taking an action like this does nothing to bring the conflict closer to an end - it only makes it last longer and bring about the deaths of more American soldiers.

This was the object of the lesson of democracy when voters voted to make change in congressional leadership last November. For the past six years the Republicans in congress rubber stamped Bush-Cheney war machine. Polls show how Americans are fed up with this war and lies Bush-Cheney used to lead us to war.

Absolutely!!!! Let's face it, this is a very unpopular war and a lot of people were turned off by Bush's arrogance and stubborness. The people spoke loud and clear when the Democrats regained control of Congress in the mid-term elections; they wanted someone to stand up to Bush.

It would be nice if they had solutions. They will just add to the problems not solve a thing. We will end up in a worse situation and they will not take any of the credit.
