My wife and I built a house in 2003,and our water heater for the plumbing is shared with the in floor heat that we had installed for the basement. The problem we have at this moment everytime the water heater turns on, there is a knocking sound something feirce inside the tank itself. I have drained it in the past, because we have extremly hard water without a water softner. Is this going to be expensive?
I have replaced water heaters before, but this one is one of those high effiency ones.

It isn't water hammer, or you would hear it at other times also. Mineral deposits at the bottom of your water heater tank wont cause the hammer noise. Electric water heater, right? the heating elements are covered with the mineral deposits. They can be replaced. If you feel confident, you can do it yourself. If not, have a serviceman do it.

could just be the mineral deposits on the bottom of the water heater. Flushing it may help. Without actually hearing the sound it's making it's hard to be certain. I don't believe the heater is bad tho being only 4 years old. I'd suggest looking into a water softener.

From your description I'm thinking "water hammer". They make absorbers such as this one...

You often find these along with the faucets for clothes washers.

Or you may need a small expansion tank.

Have a licensed plumber check it out before you spend too much $$$.
