Articles of Confederation

The plan was to avoid a monarchy/dictatorship at all costs.

Distribution of power was the key - states with automony.

Thats why they designed the Articles of Confederation - a collection of automonus states with a weak federal government.

But that didnt work out as the states were TOO independant to be a collective - i.e. currency problems, commerce problems.

Then they made the Constitution.

There is also the debate between the Federalists and the (other ppl?). Democracy V Republic.

The problem in a pure democracy is majority rule, so the minority would be trampled on. Hence America is a republic with constitutional protection for the minority, a weak executive to avoid tyranical control, and federalist to mainatin state autonomy (weakened over the years though!)
