I moved to Manchester from Stoke on Trent 18 months ago, and you do need to move with caution especially if you are on your own. I moved up to be with my fella (now my hubby) and we have been living in Ancoats near the town centre. Prior to moving here, I had heard bad things - but that is the other side of Ancoats, where you can get the gangs of kids etc. The property is really nice here, close to the town centre but getting more expensive by the day.
We are looking to buy now & the areas that are lovely & have good schools are Audenshaw & parts of Droylsden - but they are so expensive, even the ex local authority houses are fetching £180,000! So we've decided to wait & carry on partying near to town.
Avoid Moss Side (violence), Salford & Levenshulme (shootings), Harpurhey is a bit dodgy & Moston, although some lovely houses, has a v.high crime rate.
I would love to live in Sale (now so expensive), Didsbury (exp), Fallowfield is quite nice - close to town & full of students if you are looking for the party scene, or the town centre.
Good luck with your move!

Dear oh dear why do people keep slagging off Manchester! It's ok.I have lived in Whitefield that was fine, Salford 6 Charlestown, not fine bad area unless you were raised there. Eccles, fine. Just same as any big city take care watch what you do and don't Walk around like a victim! My wife and I moved out to the high peak when she got pregnant so we could raise our child in a better place. We both work in Manchester and will take our son to see it when he's older. Good luck and enjoy it theres alot to offer here.

If you're moving to south Manchester- Didsbury's nice, as is Chorlton. Don't move to Moss side.. Withington is on the main road out of city centre & in between the student bits (Rusholme & Fallowfield) & the nicer bits (Didsbury), so it's middle of the road prices, quite near city centre & has its own little community. I recently moved to Whalley Range cos it's near Chorlton & cheap but there's not much to rave about aside from that! Depends what you're looking for..

Altrincham - No problems, has some areas with millionaires houses
Salford - Too violent except Salford Quays.
StockPort - its a town/small city close to Manchester there are good and bad areas
Bolton - an other town/small city close to Manchester, very quiet
Bury -quiet little city/town close to Manchester, but some areas are just for rich people.
Wigan - Town close to Salford, its a good place to live except the area close to Salford.
Rochdale - usually quiet but the area close to Oldham are violent.
Oldham - Its hard to explain...There are good areas, most of the population is Muslim.
City Centre- too expensive plus on Saturdays/Friday nights is very loud
Didsbury- good but expensive
Trafford- fine
Tameside- its a big neighbourhood, its very quiet
Hulme- It used to be a bad place but now its fine to live in
Sale- very good place to live, quiet and not expensive in general.
I hope this helps

I live in Blackley, North Manchester. Avoid like the plague! Most of North Manchester is bad, but there are nice pockets here and there.
live in south manchester and they are up their own arses!
Didsbury, the heatons and stuff are nice places to live. it really depends on your budget. if i had to live anywhere in greater manchester, money no object, it would be bramall or saddleworth

avoid moss side and longsight!! theyre pretty caught up in the gang scene. i only really know about south manchester other than that... fallowfield is full of students, and lots of bars, so probably not the best! withington is nice, cheap(ish) property, and quite quiet. didsbury village is also very nice, however, quite expensive!

Manchester is a wicked place!
Same as any massive city, you learn where to avoid pretty soon and even then the reputation doesn't necessarily mean you'll get mugged etc.
