This is a great idea!
You can try any of the two options-
1. Take the ferry from Gateway to Mandwa. Interharbour Catamarans Ferry Ltd., Maldar Catamarans & Ajantha Launches provides this service from 0600 hrs to 1800 hrs . To reach Mandwa takes 35 min. to 45 mins. depending on the type of boats. From Mandwa all these three companies carry passengers to Alibag in their own luxury buses. This bus journey takes another 30 minutes to reach Alibag.Ticket cost (one way) Rs. 60- 100 per head inclusive of bus transport. From Alibagh bus stand you can take an auto to the alibagh beach, 1 km away. Time taken from point to point -1 hr.20 mins max.
2. Take State Transport Bus to Alibagh- should cost you around the same as ferry, but will take you three (3) hours to reach!
The ferry ride is more exciting and takes less time, so opt for the ferry.
Other options -There are a number of private, deluxe, luxury buses plying round the clock from Mumbai, Parel, Dadar, Boriwali and Thane. Alibag is on the Mumbai-Goa route (not exactly - from Vadkhal - there is a diversion) and is also accessible by Konkan Railway. Get down at Panvel and you can catch a bus.

Even if you have a car, the ferry is the best option since you are looking for the cheapest and quickest way to travel and are planning a day trip. Taking your car means wasting 6 hours minimum on the road, when you can actually spend more time on the beach.

Cheap and Fast are two different things dear.
CHEAP:
Take a train till you reach PEN station. From PEN, take a ST bus for Alibag. Return by bus to PEN and take a train till Mumbai. Kokan railway plys various trains on the route. Buses are available every 15-20 minutes.
FAST:
Take a boat ride from Gateway of India. It will take you to Mandwa jetty. From there the buses provided by boat company will take you to Alibag city. The total journey may take about 1 hour and 15 minutes or so. The cheapest ferry is by Ajanta company and the costliest by PNP. Fare includes the bus service charges, too.
Happy journey.
