Here is the situation: company wants to send a nastygram to a third party and they want to sound like they are a bigger company than they actually are. The want to sound like they have a legal department without actually having a legal department. They do not want to misrepresent that they are an attorney, but at the same time would not be too upset if the other party misinterpreted their position to believe that they actually are an attorney. The position does not necessarily have to be relating to a legal department but needs to show that it has a lot of clout and gives the impression that this is a bigger company than it actually is. Any ideas for a good title for this person?

There will be no misrepresentation. The person will be actually be given the title by the board. If the other side misinterprets and believes the company has more than it has, it's not clear how we can be faulted for their error.

I don't think it's a good idea to attempt to fool the 3rd party into thinking you've got a legal department & don't. What happens when they anonymously call and ask to speak with your legal dept & the person who answers says "we don't have one of those!"? Then you will look like the fool & your plan backfires.

As long as you have a good position to argue from, write the letter, argue your position & have the head honcho of the company sign, i.e. - President, Chief Executive Officer, HMFIC, (head m.f. in charge) etc. The top boss should implicitly be in charge of your legal department, if you had one.

How about - External Corporate Audit, Compliance and Enforcement Division?

I don't know the situation, but honestly, if it ever ends up in court, the letter would most likely end up as evidence, and judges usually do not like such bullying tactics. It could come back to haunt you that way, I've seen it in the law firm where I work. Send the nastygram if you must, but don't pretend you have a legal department.
