you dont have to do anything you dont want to as long as that patient is not a minor or deemed incompetent by a court you have the right to refuse anything you want.
If they do it anyway then its considered battery

A pap smear checks for cervical cancer, that's all it does.
If you don't want one for any reason or feel uneasy about it, DECLINE IT. Of course no one can force you to have a pap smear against your will!!! There is no "law" requiring pap smears. My friend at work hasn't had one in a decade and so far she isn't in jail yet! LOL
This is YOUR BODY and YOUR BABY and you do what feels right for you.
Incidentally, I never heard that there is any risk from a pap smear, and I kind of doubt it. Anyway, I had one when I was 8 weeks pregnant or so, and had no problems from it. I am now 35 weeks pregnant.
You will need other vaginal cultures, regardless of the pap smear issue, to make sure you don' t have any bacterial infections or other infections that can infect the baby. I would not advise declining these because they can effect the baby if left untreated and undiagnosed.

Okay honestly any medical procedure has risks even them doing things as simple as checking your temprature. But what you have to do is weigh out the risks of such procedures. Example : if there is a higher chance that they'll miss a very serious condition if they don't do a pap smearcompared to a pap smear actually having negative effects you have to weigh out the risk and use your better judgement. As a pregnant women or even just as a person you have all the rights to deny any medical procedures but it's a matter of being informed enough to make the best decision.

I read that it's all about the object they use to scrape the cells from the cervix. Make sure the Doctor does not use a cytobrush - I got it from this website: http://www.vcs.org.au/practices/faqs.html which is from is the largest single laboratory reporting Pap tests in Australia. My husband and I want to start trying for a baby but I have been having trouble getting in to see the doc for my pap smear which was due a few weeks ago, and I just missed another appointment today - but we are going to start anyway now that I have found out this information!

When I was 12 weeks I had to have a colposcopy which is much more invasive than a pap smear. I had my pap at 8 weeks. It will not cause harm to the baby. After the pap, I didn't bleed but after the colposcopy I did but it was because the cervix was irritated due to the biopsy. You are fine if you have one. If you still have concerns after talking to your dr then you can deny it but if there is something wrong with you and they don't know it it will make it worse. I am high risk due to my results....so they wouldn't have known to refer me to the high risk ob if I did not have a pap.....I guess it's up to you but the pap does not hurt the baby at all. Good luck and congrats!

there is no law REQUIRING you to do anything in your pregnancy, you always have the right to refuse medical treatment. although a doctor may refuse to treat you if he feels it is a liability, but you can always find a new doctor. Most women have a papsmear early in pregnancy, I had one and I was completely fine. It may cause a little cramping for you but the risks to the baby are pretty slim to none. And it may be dangerous not to because a papsmear can detect abnormalities that may affect the pregnancy. In my opinion, I would recommend having one but if you feel very strongly against it, you can certainly deny it.

Less than 2% of people over 8 weeks have a miscarriage and less than 1% of them are from a pap smear. I just had one not to long ago, and yes it was kind of painful and yes I bled but all that was done by the next day and now I know that everything is okay for my child and me. I don't think you are required by law to have one but you should for your sake and the sake of your child.

By law? Of course there is no law stating that you have to have a papsmear. Thats sily. But I would listen to your doctor if they are telling you to have one for whatever reason. Thats the job of an OBGYN, thats what they deal with every day, why would they purposely put you or your baby in harms way. If that was the case, healthy babies wouldnt be born every day.

The pap is not going to hurt the baby or cause miscarriage, I don't know where you heard that craziness. They only swab the very tip of your cervix with a big q-tip.Have the pap sweetie, you need it.
