Lemieux was definitely the best #1 pick ever. Although, I have to give credit to Buffalo and Montreal. In 1970 and 1971, they took Gilbert Perrault and Guy LaFleur respectively. Perrault turned Buffalo into a contender, as they went to the finals in 1974. LaFleur was on 5 Stanley Cup winners.

While Mario Lemieux may have been the best pick player wise, the Pens pick of Sydney Crosby is by far their best pick. Why you ask? Its pretty simple. The Penguins should not have had the first pick of the draft. That pick really should have gone to the NY Rangers which finished with the worst record at the end of that season. However because of the strike, it seems like Bettman worked his genius and decided to make it a lottery, which the Penguins won. The Rangers ended up with the 15th pick in the draft. Not much of a consolation for what was an absolutely horrible team.

Player, Hall of Famer, Team Owner, Team Chairman, Cancer Research Foundation overseer...the one, the only - Mario Lemieux. Not only because of his 600+ career goals and 1,400 career points, but because of how he has stayed loyal to his team for the past 20 some years.

Not only did he come back to play after retiring, he deferred most of his final contract's salary to keep the Pens from going bankrupt. He and his investors bought the entire team in 1999 and he very recently worked with Pittsburgh city officials to finally get a new arena!

Not only has Mario proved to be the greatest player ever to wear a Penguin jersey (and ever to play in the NHL), he has devoted his entire life to his team...and a lot of money...how many players would do THAT for the franchise who drafted him #1 overall??

Let's Go Pens!!!

My answer automatically would lean towards Alexander Ovechkin. He had 52 goals and 54 assists in his first season, as I am sure we all remember. Crosby only had 39 goals, and 63 assists. While Crosby is the better assist man, Ovechkin still has more points, had a positive +/- rating, and only spent half as much time in the penalty box (his 52 minutes to Crosby's 110).

Other players such as Yzerman and Kariya automatically come to mind, but their stats don't even compare, despite them being great players.

Penguins and Lemieux. One day that answer may change to Crosby.

If it's not Mario Lemieux, I would really like to hear how someone is coming up with that reasoning.

Crosby (as I keep having to post to this site a BILLION times a day) has a way to go yet before he reaches Lemieux's accomplishments.
