According to the statistics 2003 survey, there were 31,484 suicides over the span of a year. It came out to 10.8 suicides per every 100,000 people. And for every completed suicide by youth, it is estimated that 100 to 200 attempts are made. This is my reading project, we have to do a persuasive essay on certain topics and I picked suicide. I'm for it, because some people kill themselves because the loss of self esteem, etc. I just want to make sure about it and get more info. Thanks.

generally believe that human beings should be able to do whatever they want as long as they don't hurt anyone else. But I don't know how that theory works when it comes to hurting yourself. Theoretically, if someone wants to kill themself, that should be their perogative. Your body is your temple and you can do whatever you want to it, right?

But maybe not.
In US law, I do believe suicide is against the law. Do you think this should be?

Clearly, commiting suicide DOES affect other people - it hurts friends and family and loved ones. If you have a family to support, you are depriving them of income. Then again, maybe they do better under your life insurance policy than when you were alive. (actually, does anyone know if you can still collect life insurance on someone who commits suicide?)

I feel somewhat sorry for them cuz they obviously had such bad luck in their lives that they couldn't bear it and because they couldn't see the bright sides of life.

On the other hand some just kill themselves because of a break-up or just cuz they aren't popular or something similar. But it's true that most suicides are comitted by young people since at that age the most important thing is acceptance of people the sam age, friends, school mates and so on...

I would think that suicide is something horrible since life is a miracle itself and it's a shame that some people can't ejoy it despite all the roughness and downs that happened to them.

But since todays society is so, how should I say, fast...everything must be fast and perfect and all in all beautiful and the best.... the rise of suiciders isn't at all suprising because of that. The society is becoming lifeless, everything is just around money and work and presents. I mean, just look at todays holidays - the point in them today is how big and expensive presents you get. Noone is satisfied with just a postcard or a friendly e-mail....

But still....suicides shouldn't be anymore. There are lots of positive sides to life. Not everything is dark and gloomy as most people seem to see it.

Ok, I'l stop typing now....my fingers hurt :(

It is more than disturbing that you are "for" suicide. Does this mean that if a close friend or family member was suicidal, you would be "for" it? You do not know what other people go through, and the factors in their lives that lead them to believing that killing themselves is their only option. I feel very sorry for people who commit suicide, and think it is tragic that they didn't get help that could have saved them. I think instead of spending your time posting that you are doing a paper on suicide and that you are "for it," you should spend your time finding some compassion and a heart.

is that Global or National?
You are for suicide? wow thats um mm something.....

I don't know if self esteem is one of the main issues though. I think they are depressed and they don't see any reason to go on anymore. I read some where that family issues, drugs abuse, and just the environment they live in. My teacher said that suicide rate is higher in uneducated sort of like Ghetto ( no offense) areas. Also if the mother or father did drugs then kids are more likely to commit suicide then kids from a healthy family. Another thing that is that like if some one commits a suicide in ones family then others are likely to follow. Self Esteem probably has a lot to do with it but I don't know if its one of the main things though, i knew this guy who graduated from med school with top marks and started his residency and 2 weeks later killed himself. He did not have self esteem issues, and he left a letter saying that the reason he is doing it is because there is so much death in life (world) and in the end everyone of us is going to die so whats the point of going on.... I don't think he handled the hospital well. Its one thing to study gross anatomy but another to see your patient die.

You're FOR suicide? Because of things like the loss of self esteem? You can always re-gain self esteem, but you can't return from death. I've never heard anyone say that before. That's really bizarre. I hope you don't have to read your essay alound, b/c your fellow students are going to give you a REALLY hard time!
I don't think it's good at all - no matter how bad life looks, you can always make it better. ALWAYS.

How could you be for people killing themselves? Just because your life is bad doesn't mean it won't get better, especially with these young people, they think their boyfriend breaking up with them is the end of the world! If they would just get through it like the rest of the world, they would realize, there is so much better things, than a boyfriend you had when you were 15 years old! You are going to grow up, marry someone perfect for you, have kids that adore you, and you don't want to see them turn out to kill themself. Just because you lose a job, someone you love dies, you get paralyzed, whatever the reason may be, it happened to you for a reason, and you will get through it. You have to get through the tough times to appreciate the amazing times you will have in your life. I think you should rethink your stand on suicide, and good luck on your report.

In my opinion, suicide is a very selfish act.I feel sorry for the families and friends that are left behind. Life is not easy and it is just very hard for a lot of people, but, taking the easy way out is just easy for the person committing suicide and then makes life even harder for the ones left behind!

i agree but not for self esteem as much as depression, abuse and nihilism.. those are better arguments... i knew a guy who commited suicide... he got accepted to harvard and he was in the 98th percentile in all america... still he did it because he had depression... other psycological problems can also be used to ustify suicide... or when a person is too stupid to know any better.

you're for...suicide?? i don't think i actually know anyone who's for it. i feel really bad for the people who feel like suicide is their last option...i'm against it because every life is precious, and i think we need to work harder to reach out to those who are depressed. and for someone who is thinking about suicide, i think that they should not do it because they don't realize how much ppl will miss them when they're gone.

I have decided that suicide is completely out of the question. I refuse to end the suffering of others... No, I must contemplate homicide and end the suffering of one... ME!!!
