The longest running tv series, I believe, is The Guilding Light. It's a soap opera that originally started on the radio, and with the advent and popularity of tv, switched over sometime in the 50's.

In what country? Still going? And I take "serious" meant series

UK: Coronation Street has been running for about 40 years I think.

MASH ran for 11 series, and re-runs are still going.

The soaps like Days of Out Lives, Young and Restless, etc have been going for years as well.

Dr Who has also been going for a lot of years

In the US:
Gunsmoke went for 20 years 633 episodes
Lassie 19 years 588 episodes
The Simpson's 387 episodes from 1989 to present
Law and Order 381 episodes from 1990 to present

7th Heaven, I think... Gosh, that's been going on for at least 11 years with the same family. But some soap operas have probably been going on longer,.
