What western nations expanded into Asia and Southeast Asia during the nineteenth century? What indigenous nations were conquered by whom? Finally how did the responses of China and Japan differ; which was more successful and why?

Peter is very wrong. The only Asiatic properties held by the US in 1900 were the Philippine Islands -- an enormous imperial mistake, and set for independence in 1945; and Guam in the Marianas. If we hadn't bought the Philippines and then suppressed their independence movements, ...well, who knows, but the Japanese might never have felt the need to attack Pearl Harbor.

The US never had any interest in China, except for the protection of its citizens, most of them goddamned missionaries. US gunboats were indeed deployed on inland rivers for that purpose, but only because there was no effective central government that could contain bandit warlords.
