I have a navy blue cloak and wanted to make it purple by adding scarlet. Also some azure breeches and gambeson, but would scarlet dye make these purple? The cloak worries me that it will turn near black. What do you think?

The sade of purple depends on the shade of red. A bright red will make a barney color purple. The darker the red the darker the color. IF the color is closer to a maroon or deep burgundy it will be a dark purple but might have a hint of brown to it.

i just looked up the tone of scarlet red and i think it will make a nice purple. lol good luck. You can always try dying a different piece of fabric of the same color. Also remember fabrics with elastic in them do not dye very well ( example stretch fabrics, jeans etc),

The problem you r'e going to have in dying the cloak,is that it will be hardly noticeable because it's navy.It will be a waste of your time. The azure breeches will turn out a shade of purple if a scarlet dye is used.

It should come out dark purple. But if the blue is too dark, it may just come out muddy.

Test it by cutting off a small piece and die it first. If you like the results, die the who thing.

I think navy may be a little to dark to make purple, it will be a very deep purple.

More than likely it will turn black looking considering it's navy blue.
